On 12 August 2026, Regulation (EU) 2025/40 on Packaging and Packaging Waste (PPWR) becomes applicable. The Regulation applies to all packaging placed on the EU market, regardless of the material or sector of use, including food contact packaging.
From this date, the first PPWR requirements will become applicable, including:
- limits on the combined concentration of lead, cadmium, mercury and hexavalent chromium (100 mg/kg in total);
- new restrictions on PFAS in food contact packaging;
- preparation of the technical documentation and EU Declaration of Conformity;
- compliance with the obligations applicable to manufacturers, importers and other economic operators throughout the supply chain.
Not all PPWR requirements will apply from 12 August 2026. The Regulation provides for a phased implementation, with additional obligations becoming applicable over the coming years. Many technical requirements will also be further specified through delegated and implementing acts adopted by the European Commission.
The upcoming 12 August deadline therefore marks the starting point of the compliance journey. Now is the time to ensure that your packaging, technical specifications and supporting documentation are aligned with the new PPWR requirements, reducing the risk of non-compliance.
