Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) is a perfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) primarily formed as a degradation product of various chemicals, including some active substances used in plant protection products (PPPs) and biocidal products (BPs). The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have been tasked by the European Commission to investigate the behavior of TFA in the environment, given the growing concern over contamination of soil and water and its potential impact on human health through drinking water.
Scientific findings are expected by 1 June 2027.
