Perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), its salts, and chemicals related to PFHxS are formally listed by the EU in Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2019/1021 (POPs Regulation). On August 8, 2023, the news was announced with the publication of Regulation (EU) 2023/1068, in the Official Journal of European Union. Twenty days following publication, the regulation came into effect.
The POPs Regulation forbids the production, distribution, and use of compounds (as such, in mixtures or articles) included in Annex I. PFHxS can only be present in products in trace amounts as contaminants of substances (thus not intentionally added), and the EU Commission has set a limit value of 0.025 mg/kg.
