ECHA’s Biocidal Products Committee (BPC) adopted three opinions on active substance’s applications during its meeting held on 1-3 and 8-9 March 2022. The opinions will be available soon on the BPC webpage.
Methylene dithiocyanate (PT 12)
Methylene dithiocyanate, a substance mainly used in papermaking to prevent or control the growth of slime, has not been approved for the use in slimicides (PT 12), as it is very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects that lead to environmental risks that cannot be mitigated.
(13Z)-Hexadec-13-en-11-yn-1-yl acetate (PT 19)
The Committee approved instead (13Z)-Hexadec-13-en-11-yn-1-yl acetate, used in repellents and attractants, as an active substance for PT 19. However, the approval is limited to the specific use and method of application specified by the applying company.
Propiconazole (PT 8)
Concerning the renewal of propiconazole in wood preservatives (PT 8), the Committee concluded that, the substance, classified as toxic for reproduction and an endocrine disruptor, fulfils the exclusion criteria. However, it could be approved if one of the exemptions to the exclusion criteria is met. The European Commission will take further action to obtain more information on this application and on the exemption to the exclusion criteria, and in particular on suitable and sufficient alternatives for the different use classes.
The BPC also adopted the following four positive opinions on Union authorisations:
- Propan-1-ol for use in human hygiene (PT 1);
- Propan-2-ol for use in disinfectants and algaecides not intended for direct application to humans or animals (PT 2) and in disinfectants for surfaces in contact with food and feed (PT 4);
- L-(+) lactic acid for PT 2; and
- Active chlorine released from sodium hypochlorite for PT 2.
The next BPC meeting will be held in June 2022.
