The European Commission adopted the updated REACH Fee Regulation on 15 October 2025, introducing important changes to how small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) apply for company size verification.
From 5 February 2027, a new ex-ante SME verification process will apply. SMEs planning to submit registrations or applications for authorisation must obtain company size validation before submitting dossiers to ECHA to benefit from reduced fees.
Applications must be submitted at least two months in advance and supported by documentation on headcount, turnover and balance sheet data, including linked and partner enterprises. Once recognised, SME status will be valid for three years and apply to all ECHA submissions during this period.
