During their June meetings, the Risk Assessment Committee (RAC) and theSocio-Economic Analysis Committee (SEAC) provisionally concluded that four sectors could be affected by the proposed restriction of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in the EU. The sectors affected include consumer mixtures, cosmetics and ski waxes, as well as plating and metal production. The persistence of PFAS in the environment is a major concern, as these substances can remain in the environment for a long time and some may represent a risk to human and environmental health.
In future meetings, the committees will evaluate further sectors, such as textiles, food contact materials and packaging, oil and mining. The final opinions will be communicated to the public and handed over to the European Commission, which will decide on the regulatory measures to be taken. This process is essential to protect public health and the environment from the harmful effects of PFAS.
