The European Parliament adopted the new regulation on detergents and surfactants on January 22. The revised legislation addresses critical aspects of the previous framework and aims to support industry while providing clearer guidance.

The main changes include:

  • easier market access for detergents across the EU
  • increased protection of human health and the environment, through improved requirements (i.e. clearer labelling information, strengthened market surveillance – particularly for imports – and greater transparency)
  • updated rules to cover the latest innovations (i.e. the use of microorganisms in cleaning products)
  • encouragement of more sustainable practices (i.e. refill sale of detergent)
  • introduction of digital labelling and a digital product passport
  • ban on animal testing
  • The new rules will apply three and a half years after the regulation enters into force.
