The European Commission has published a draft Commission Implementing Regulation proposing the approval of ethanol as an existing active substance for use in biocidal products of:

  • Product-Type 1 – Human hygiene
  • Product-Type 2 – Disinfectants and algaecides not intended for direct application to humans or animals
  • Product-Type 4 – Food and feed area disinfectants

The draft follows the recent assessment under the Biocidal Products Regulation (EU) No 528/2012 and represents an important step towards the formal approval of ethanol for these product types.

The proposed date of approval is 1 May 2028!

Please note: this is currently a draft Regulation and should not be considered a final approval. The formal adoption process still needs to be completed.

Companies placing ethanol-based biocidal products on the EU market should closely monitor the next steps and assess the potential regulatory impact on their products and authorisation strategies.
