OpenTox Virtual Conference 2021: TEAM mastery joins the global meeting
TEAM mastery S.r.l. will participate in the OpenTox Virtual Conference 2021, a global four-day virtual meeting for a safer world. The event will take place online from 20 to 24 September.
On September 22nd at 15:25, our colleague Costanza Rovida will give a presentation on Challenges in implementing NAMs (New Approach Methodologies) for Endocrine Disruption characterization of chemicals in the regulatory context.
New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) in toxicology represent a paradigm shift from the traditional system. NAMs involve a new and more efficient system based on non-animal methods that are combined to understand the potential health effects of a chemical. This approach requires expertise to determine the best method to apply and how to interpret the results.
Endocrine Disruptor (ED) activity is species-specific and requires a human-focused approach based on the study of the mechanism of action. The animal testing approach has many limitations due to species differences, non-monotonic dose-response issues, and protocol design flaws. The risk of false negatives is high, but false positives can also be problematic when substances are unnecessarily excluded from the market.
The application of NAMs in this area could solve many issues, but their use is still limited mainly because there is little incentive to adopt them. EU regulations are not very open to new approaches, and animal testing is often mandatory. In vitro approaches are suggested only on a voluntary basis and solely to clarify a mechanism.
