On 2/05/2024 the Nordic Council of Ministers, which includes the competent authorities of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Åland, published the report “Analysis of needs for enforcement of PFAS in articles and chemical products” within which it is recommended to the European Commission to start the development of standardized protocols for the analysis of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in chemical articles and products to improve enforcement of and compliance with regulations in the EU. PFAS are a group of more than 10000 substances that have been used in articles and chemical products for decades. PFAS have become subject to regulation in the EU and globally due to concerns for the environment and human health,. This report highlights the concept that effective enforcement of PFAS restrictions depends on the accuracy and reproducibility of analytical methods. Therefore, the need for constant commitment and improvement in research in the field of PFAS analysis is underlined, for which collaboration between regulatory bodies, laboratories and research institutes is essential.
