REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) is an important Regulation, published by the European Parliament in December 2006 that obliges all Member States to a comprehensive series of studies and examinations on substances used in the chemical and chemical-pharmaceutical area; one of the aims of the REACH Regulation is increase awareness of the risks and damage that these molecules may cause to human and animal health. This huge project would imply – especially from the toxicological point of view – the use of millions of laboratory animals, however many experts, as Dr. Constance Rovida, are working in order to reduce and, if possible, replace the in vivo testing.
