Regulation (EU) 2026/859 has been published, introducing new restrictions under REACH for 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT), a substance classified as carcinogenic.
Starting from 10 May 2027, the placing on the market and use of 2,4-DNT will be prohibited in articles intended for consumers and professional users when present at concentrations equal to or above 0.1% by weight.
The measure, based on ECHA assessments, aims to reduce exposure to a substance with no safe threshold, which has been identified in various products, including automotive components and plastic materials.
Specific exemptions are provided (e.g. military uses and explosives), along with a longer transitional period for certain automotive applications, extending until 2029.
