The European Commission adopted new limit rules for 4 perfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS) in food. The goal is to minimize the exposure to citizens and protect them against the negative impact of these hazardous chemicals on the immune system, the development of fetuses and babies, or cholesterol. The Member States have unanimously supported the new rules, which are based on scientific assessment from EFSA, that will apply as of 1st January 2023.
The four chemicals involved are Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) and perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS).
