In response to numerous cases of intoxication, the European Commission has introduced new rules on the labelling of products containing nitrous oxide. With Implementing Decision (EU) 2024/2797, a measure has been approved requiring the indication:
H372 “Causes damage to the nervous system through prolonged or repeated inhalation exposure”, along with the related hazard pictogram.
This decision, with labelling mandatory on packaging and primary containers, classifies nitrous oxide as a substance with specific target organ toxicity – repeated exposure (STOT RE1). The Decision applies throughout the EU.
